Rowdy Soul

The title track of our debut album, Rowdy Soul is a rough-edged American folk song with roots stretching back to the 1930s—and likely long before, with the line ‘damn those Irish potatoes’ is being a reference to the potato famine from 1845-1852. It’s the tale of a carefree drifter with no time for crops, captains, or consequences.

We’ve kept the spirit of the original and added a verse of our own, full of cheek and pub-born bravado. It’s raw, rowdy, and exactly the kind of song we love to sing.

Lyrics

I'm a rowdy soul, I'm a rowdy soul, and I don't care whether I work or not

I'm a rowdy soul, I’m a rowdy soul and I don't care whether I work or not

Come here dog, and get your bone, an’ tell me what shoulder d’ya wan’ it on

A penny off, a penny on and one more load an’ I'll be gone

Chorus

I didn't plant no corn this year didn't plant no beans nor tomatoes

I didn't plant no corn this year but damn them Irish potaters

Chorus

I saw the captain’s coat just a hangin’ up on the wall

I stole that captain’s coat and wore it to the fancy dress ball

Chorus

Well, next time I build my house gonna build my chimney higher

Mud daubers swarmin’ round gonna put me out of my fire

Chorus

Chorus Next time I’m in my bunk, I’m gonna lock the door

That first mate is doin’ his rounds and there’s fish all over my floor!

Chorus

Pass that grog around here son, and I’ll tell you a story

‘bout things with claws that scratch and bite, like women mean and whory!

Chorus x2

Man in vintage attire passionately speaking or singing at a microphone during an outdoor event, with others standing nearby.
